Daniel D Portado’s concept of Self-Deportation once again came up last night when Mitt Romney was doing his speech. To be honest with you “La Politica a mi no me interesa mucho” Pero cuando se trata de divertirse while making a point I’m all ears for that. Mr. Lalo Alcaraz is an expert on doing this hehe. MY FIRST TIJUANA TRIP

Last Saturday we took our kid for his first trip to Tijuana, my mom and suegra had to visit the Destist so went ahead and planned a mini trip to TJ with them. Before leaving we had the usual burrito de huevo and a coffee and headed out to pick up my mom’s and suegra. My kid was stocked and wanted to get there already.

The first thing my kid asked for was Papitas so I got him some Adobada Sabritas, hehe. Some of the stuff on the buildings are pretty interesting. The building decorations are art on it’s own.

This was on somebodies wall, don’t know what it means, it’s probably just for decoration, but it’s a full on painting on tile ebbed ed into the wall.

Hand drawn signs have always been my favorite, here’s a Taxi sign in the street. I wish I could make this into a font.

Churros with Cinnamon are the best. Have you seen how these things are made? Awesome.

Julian was tired of eating Papitas, Tacos, Nieve and candy he finally was about to give in and call it a day. Before he fell asleep he told me that “Me gusta Mexico” then I had to carry him for an hour before we crossed the border. I took some time to post some DIMEX stickers before leaving town. Going back pretty soon. Maybe Ensenada this time. Nos vemos.

I couldn’t find the building, it was a little difficult so I asked the security dude in the library and he pulled out a huge map of the Cal Poly Pomona, looked at it and pointed at the building. I still couldn’t tell, it was a bunch of boxes that where suppose to resemble buildings. So he told me how to get there and I took off. The building was uphill and it reminded me how much out of shape I am at the moment, I caught my breath and finally found it. Some cool looking chick was sitting in the floor reading the business side of the Los Angeles Times and in the background I would hear a guy talking about how he had shipped a customers package a while back, yeah it felt like the business building.

I find the room and the LBSA reunion was in full session, I felt that weird feeling that you get when you do your first speech in front of your high school class, nervousness like a mother f#$%^*. I made it out alive, delivered what I had to say and finished my 30 minute speech. I got to say that I feel that I’m getting a little better as I do more and more of these talks. It was really cool sharing some of my thoughts with the students at Cal Poly Pomona, and it was an honor to talk in front of students who want to start their own businesses in the next couple of months. Thank you again I learned a lot and hope to see you guys next year.

My dad told me once that he was going to go back to Mexico, as soon as me and my sister graduated from College and got a good stable career/job. He told me, that he wanted to die in his Tierra natal. I asked him “Why did we come here then, if all this time you have been wanting to go back?” We came here for you. At the time I didn’t understand that, but now that I am a little older and am a parent of my own, I understand completely what he meant that day. Because of his decision to come to the USA I have gotten a good education and a stable career/job and thank him for the sacrifice he took 20 years ago. I just saw this trailer because I heard on the news that a Latino was nominated for the Oscars and wanted to know what the buzz was all about. Now I know. 14 YEARS LA CUEVA

I remember my first time I went to La Cueva. They were in a huge night club called El Patio in Rialto, it was 2001 I was around 17 still in high school and was going through a phase where all I would listen to was corridos. One day my friends invited me so I tagged along and went for the ride. My first Rock en Español club, I was surprised to see how people danced and dressed at this new club and to top it off the type of music that was played. I had grown up listening to this type of rolas because of my dad. He would bump it through his little boom box while working out. El Tri, Caifanes and Mana just to name a few. I felt good, connected, I felt welcomed, Cueva spoke Culture to me. This Friday they will be celebrating their 14th birthday, it has been 10 years since the first day I set foot there and to this day I feel the same thing when I walk into this Club. Join us this Friday to celebrate a decade of Rock en Español and to be part of el Desmadre. The line-up at the Jump. Nos vemos.
